Indian Police Nab Hackers

By Cyber Cafe plays host to hacking ring
After the embarrassment of a hacking incident on its official Web sites, a special cybercrime unit of the Indian Mumbai Police Department achieved some vindication on 11 July. According to Rediff.com, the BPD's Cyber Crime Investigation Cell has detained two marine engineers, 47-year-old Pradeep Kumar and 38-year-old Jairaj, suspected of committing the hacking. A third suspect, a computer engineer with the pseudonym Dr. Neukar, remains at large.

The trio are allegedly members of a group called G-13 Hackers Force. Police believe they cracked the cyber cell sites from an Internet café, then spent four minutes on it sending e-mails and posting abusive messages about police security on the home page.

The Mumbai police's cyber cell was formed about a year ago to tackle hacking and other computer-related crimes. The attack on their sites, and , occurred on 9 July.

Under India's Information Technology Act, hackers convicted in this kind of incident can spend up to two years in prison.
